"If people only knew how hard I work to gain my mastery. It wouldn't seem so wonderful at all." - Michelangelo
What we believe:
At Hayton C of E Primary School our aim is to enable children to communicate through the arts, giving children a voice through self-expression and individual creativity. Our art curriculum is designed in a way that enables children to think, work and communicate like an artist. As a school, we are ambitious in our approach to teaching art by allowing children an opportunity to acquire and develop knowledge and skills associated with art and represent their learning during the creative process.
Art can be a very personal experience, and our art curriculum is designed to embody our school values and the drivers that underpin our learning throughout the school. We use our school drivers to ensure our children, and their community, are represented in our art curriculum by;
Knowledge is our North: a knowledge-rich curriculum
Our Art curriculum is designed to give pupils every opportunity to develop their ability, nurture their talent and interests, express their ideas and thoughts about the world, as well as learning about art and artists across cultures and through history. Knowledge organisers for each unit support pupils by providing a highly visual record of the key knowledge and techniques learnt, encouraging recall of skills processes, key facts and vocabulary.
Skills are our South: Understanding our place in the world
Art has been used across the world as a means of communication before language began. Children at Hayton are taught from the very start of their education that every child can be an artist, and that their artwork can have an impact in the wider world. Children will learn about local artists and those artists whose work has spanned generations and is considered important to this date.
Excellence is our East: Aspiring to achieve
The creative arts are an integral part of our society and our countries economy. Children understand that the knowledge and skills they acquire through our art curriculum can lead to job opportunities and successful careers in the industry. Children know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.
Worldliness is our West: Broadening horizons
Art is an integral part of developing a child’s creativity and self-expression. It can be a way to communicate their own understanding about the world around them. Each piece of artwork that a child creates can inspire questions and answers, emotions and response. Children are not bound by any one discipline and can explore ways of creating truly unique pieces of artwork that highlights their learning.
The subject encourages children to express their individuality and take inspiration from significant individuals through time. Through the sharing of rich stories, children are encouraged to learn how key artists and sculptors have brought about change both locally and to the wider world to enhance their learning within the subject. This gives every child a chance to master skills and knowledge associated with our broad and exciting art and design provision.
As a school, we aim to ensure that all pupils:
Develop the creative, technical and practical expertise associated with our art provision, including drawing and sketching, painting, printing, textiles and 3D form and shape.
Children are given opportunities to explore key elements of the art curriculum, including tone, texture, colour, line and shape.
Understand how significant individuals within the art community have brought about change and the influence they have had.
Build and apply a repertoire of knowledge, understanding and skills in order to design and create expressions of art by revisiting key concepts and learning.
Critique, evaluate and improve their outcomes and the work of others.
How do we do it?
Here at Hayton, we use a variety of teaching and learning styles in art lessons, with our principal aim being to develop the children’s knowledge, skills and understanding. We ensure children have the opportunity to investigate, explore and develop as artists and are aware of the success they can have in the subject during their school life and beyond. We do this through a combination of whole class teaching and individual/group activities as well as specialist weeks. We strive to provide opportunities for children to flourish with days and projects dedicated to the teaching of art, as well as home projects that forge links to our local community. The children are encouraged to evaluate their own ideas, as well as evaluate the work of others, including artists and designers, and say what they think and feel about them. We give children the opportunity to work both individually, in collaboration with others and to use a wide range of materials, tools and techniques.
How do we know if we have had an impact?
Class teachers will continually carry out formative assessments within art lessons (through questioning, observations, discussions, evidence in books) which will then inform planning and further lessons. Continuous subject monitoring and book study will be made by the subject leader to ensure full coverage of the art curriculum across all year groups. Children will be encouraged to use self and peer assessments in art lessons, to develop their understanding of reflective practice.
